The USS Beaver

Both British and American submarines served as beacon ships during Operation Torch, lying at the surface with infrared signal lights to mark the landing points for the incoming troop transports. Five SubRon 50 vessels participated, working as beacons near Safi, Mehedia, and Fedhala. USS Barb under Lieutenant Commander John R. Waterman also put ashore five U.S. Army scouts in a rubber boat at Safi, to find landing points for General George Patton's tanks.

The beacon ship concept failed to work correctly, leading to chaotic landings under fire. However, the Gato-class USS Herring spotted the 5,700-ton Vichy French cargo vessel Ville du Havre and sank it with torpedoes. Simultaneously, the sixth SubRon 50 submarine, USS Blackfish, lurked outside Dakar harbor in case the Vichy ships there attempted a sortie against the Allied vessels executing Operation Torch, but the French stayed quiescent.
